The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is a nationally accredited program offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in speech-language pathology, audiology and communication sciences. These are rapidly growing professions with competitive salaries.
Certified clinicians (graduate degree required) often work as a team with psychologists, teachers, parents, physicians and social workers to screen, diagnose and treat individuals ranging from infants to the elderly. Professionals can work in schools, clinics, hospitals, health-providing organizations and private practice. The profession offers a high degree of satisfaction to its practitioners because so many people have a communication disorder, which can have a significant impact on people's lives. In this major, students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathology/audiology or phonetic sciences.
An academic/clinical program precedes study for a post-graduate degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in speech-language pathology and audiology. It is necessary to complete a master's degree in speech-language pathology and an Au.D. in audiology to qualify for these certifications:

Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

It is necessary to complete a master's degree in speech-language pathology and an Au.D. in audiology to qualify for these certifications:
- Certificate of clinical competence in audiology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
- Certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
- Teacher certification issued by the state Department of Education, and
- State licensure issued by the Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in the Agency for Health Care Administration.
By the end of semester five, students must meet the following requirements: Complete the following (15 hours minimum) or their equivalents:
- EEX 3312
- LIN 2210
- PSY 2012
- SPA 2023
- STA 2024
- Transfer students. To be considered for admission to the major, transfer students must take the following three prerequisites before beginning UF: PSY 2012, STA 2023 and one of the following -- COM 1000, SPC 2600 or SPC 2300, or their equivalents. If admitted to the major, transfer students should take LIN 2210 and EEX 3312 as soon as possible upon transfer to UF. It is not required for transfer students to take SPA 2024 since that course is not required for the major.

Students are required to complete 32 hours in the major (with grades of C or better) and the college requirements for graduation. EEX 3312 (Exceptional People), ENC 3254 (Writing in the Discipline), PSY 2012 and STA 2023 are also required. Majors should see a department adviser to create a program plan of study, which becomes the contact for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders at UF to complete a major in the department.
To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.
